2004 OSCAR MICHEAUX AWARD WINNER

"In 2004 when we were accepted into the 'Bare Bones Film Festival' for our feature, "Dog Me: Potluck" we were excited! We knew we had a good film, it was a labor of love, all of us had day jobs, but we came together over a couple of weekends and made, what we hoped was a great film. Using the Dogme95 principals, the film took a look at a couple who was having marital problems and how their relationship stacked up against others.

The weekend of the festival, I just remember being so excited that other folks were going to see the film. It was a big honor and I know people say this all of the time, it WAS a big honor just to be nominated.

At the awards ceremony I remember watching everyone else pick up hardware for some truly great films and as the end of the awards ceremony started to come, I was thinking, "People got to see the film. It was great to be a part of everything."

Then "Dog Me: Potluck" was awarded the 2004 Bare Bones Script-2-Screen Independent Film Festival Best Feature Film" and I was shocked and amazed! Then just a few moments later I was presented with the "Oscar Micheaux Spirit Award" for my work on "Dog Me: Potluck". Now I was the writer, producer, director, director of photography, and editor... not to mention the marketing department, but for an independent filmmaker, these all seemed like normal jobs... jobs you would expect to do for your film and for everyone who worked with you. It was a moving moment and one, later that night when I was done celebrating, during a moment all to myself, I cried. It was validation for all of the years of hard work and to this day it is one of the most special moments in my life.

Since that festival, our film was picked up on Netflix... you can find it if you have the traditional DVD version of Netflix. I've continued to make films and in my professional "Pay the Bills" gig, have utilized my film skills to receive an Emmy nomination and several Associated Press awards for other projects.

I will always be a filmmaker. It's what I've wanted to do since, 1977 when I walked in to a theatre to see the OG "Star Wars," before it was rebranded as "Star Wars: Episode Four "A New Hope." When I think back to the people I met at the "Bare Bones Script-2-Screen Independent Film Festival" and think back to that magical weekend I smile and feel something... something that keeps me passionate about filmmaking... something that continues to motivate me every day. I write now and sometime soon will be gearing up for another project. And when I do, I'll channel my inner "Oscar Micheaux" and remember one special weekend in Oklahoma.
